Proposal for a DIRECTIVE OF THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT AND OF THE COUNCIL on the quality of water intended for human consumption (recast)
1. The proposal is for a recast of Council Directive 98/83/EC (the Drinking Water Directive (DWD)) on the quality of water intended for human consumption. The DWD is designed to protect people from the adverse effects of drinking contaminated water by ensuring that it is wholesome and clean. As the approach was first determined over 20 years ago, the Commission has proposed to recast (i.e. consolidate, with substantive amendments) the DWD to take account of existing and emerging pressures, and aims to ensure that people living in and visiting EU Member States can continue to enjoy high quality drinking water. The Commission also took into account the EU commitment to the UN Sustainable Development Goals and the European Citizens’ Initiative, ‘Right2Water’.
