Proposal for a DIRECTIVE OF THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT AND OF THE COUNCIL amending Directive 2014/53/EU on the harmonisation of the laws of the Member States relating to the making available on the market of radio equipment

1. The proposal aims to amend Directive 2014/53/EU (known as the EU Radio Equipment Directive) to establish a common charging solution for all smartphones, tablets, cameras, headphones, portable speakers and handheld videogame consoles that require wired re-charging. The objective of the proposal is to ensure that consumers benefit from the convenience of being able to use a single charger for all their portable electronic devices and also to reduce electronic waste (e-waste).
2. The main elements of the proposal are for a single type of charging port for all electronic devices in scope of the proposal that is based on the USB-C specification; harmonised fast charging technology that will ensure that charging speed is the same; unbundling the sale of a charger from the sale of the electronic device so that consumers will be able to purchase a new electronic device without a new charger; and requiring producers to provide relevant
information on the packaging or labelling about charging performance.
