Proposal for a COUNCIL DECISION on the position to be taken on behalf of the European Union in the Fishery Committee for the Eastern Central Atlantic
1. This proposal and associated annex relate to a Council Decision establishing the position to be taken by the EU, including general principles by which it will conduct itself, as a member of the Fishery Committee for the Eastern Central Atlantic (CECAF) for the next five year period (2019-2023).
2. The proposed position broadly mirrors the key aspects of the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) and includes a commitment to ensuring CECAF promotes a sustainable ecosystems based approach to fisheries management.
3. The area under the competence of CECAF stretches across the Atlantic from Cape Spartel, Morocco, to the mouth of the Congo River. There are no direct UK domestic fisheries or Overseas Territory (OT) interests in this area.
4. Sustainable and responsible fisheries management is a keystone of UK fisheries policy and the UK is therefore supportive of the approach the EU is proposing to take as a member of CECAF.
