Proposal for a Council Decision determining the composition of the European Economic and Social Committee
1. On 4 December 2018 the Commission published two proposals for Council decision that outline proposed amendments to the composition of the Committee of the Regions (CoR) and the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) to reflect the UK’s withdrawal from the European Union.
2. An amended composition is needed because the mandates of the current committees run out in 2020 and the United Kingdom will no longer have any representatives to the CoR or to the EESC once it has left the European Union. These changes will be reflected in the Committees’ next term of office, 2020-2025.
3. The European Council will therefore adjust the composition of the CoR and the EESC before the start of the renewal of the committees’ mandate on 26 January 2020 and 9 October 2020 respectively.
4. The Commission wants to adopt the proposal on the CoR in parallel with the proposal on the EESC. We have therefore combined both of these issues into a single Explanatory Memoranda consistent with the approach in 2014.
